Ever wondered what the first few weeks of your internship will feel like? Sarah kept a diary for us!
Before I launch into this article, I feel like I should introduce myself. I’m an English Lit and History student about to start a ten-week internship in the Communications Department at Lloyds Banking Group. I will be based in Edinburgh for the summer but will be travelling to London a few times, how exciting! This is a diary that I kept during my first week, which will hopefully offer an insight into how I found starting my first ‘proper job’.
Monday 30th June, 8.43pm. Location: 35,000 feet above the Lake District
Feeling pretty nervous… I don’t enjoy flying at the best of times, but my pre-internship jitters have finally kicked in, which isn’t helping! Tomorrow I start an internship at Lloyds Banking Group and I have no idea what I’ll be doing when I arrive at the office…I’ve spent the day in London with the other 300 interns LBG is taking on this summer, which was really cool! It gave all of the interns working in Scotland a chance to get to know each other. It’ll be nice to see some familiar faces around the office, and we’ll have some people to invite to our flat-warming party!
I’ve already met my manager and he’s super-lovely, so I don’t need to worry about having a scary boss! I’m looking forward to meeting my team, although I’m still not sure on what they’ll actually expect me to do. Right now I can only hope that we have a nice landing and I can get a decent night’s sleep. Tomorrow is going to a big day: I suppose it’s the first day of my career! Eek!
Wednesday 2nd July, 9.37pm. Location: bed!
I’m exhausted, but work is going well and I moved into my flat today. I challenge any other intern to have a better view from their office than me!
Friday 4th July, 12.52pm. Location: office desk (on my lunch break, keen blogger!)
Wow, what a busy week! I’ve made a PowerPoint which is going to the Managing Director of our company, the weekly newsletter which goes out to every branch in the country and got underway with two of my summer projects. Oh, I also moved out for the first time and been to London and back; no wonder I feel so tired!
I wasn’t sure what to expect in the first week of my internship, so I was embarrassingly nervous. Luckily I was broken in gently and my first day was spent sorting my IT, meeting with the team, shaking hands with everyone in a fifty metre radius of my desk and doing lots of reading. I also did a training course on Outlook, since I was having trouble adjusting from Mac to PC… Awkward!
I’m now starting to get some proper tasks, and I’m putting my journalist hat on next week. I will be interviewing some staff taking part in a charity trek to the Sahara desert, which will be fab work experience! Unfortunately since I’m in internal communications I’m not sure how much of my writing I’ll be allowed to share with the rest of the world, but I’ll soon find out.
The annual ‘Intern and Graduate Charity Challenge’ commenced this week; raising money for Alzheimer’s Scotland. Unfortunately I’m going to miss our first team meeting, because my manager is taking me to a super-secret-exciting-meeting-I-probably-shouldn’t-blog-about…(update: it wasn’t very exciting. But it is still secret, so that’s pretty cool!)
Next week I get to visit my other office. Yes, I have two. This one’s fancy and regularly features on postcards! It’ll be a step up from my other job (at McDonalds!) I’m looking forward to it, but first, I have our flat-warming party tonight! This is looking like it’s going to be a fantastic summer, and I can’t wait to see what else I get up to over the next nine weeks!
