How to Get the Most out of Your New Internship - Intern Wardrobe

How to Get the Most out of Your New Internship
Annabelle Slator

Internships are a time to find out more about your industry, learn about the world of work and discover new things about yourself.

There are always going to be moments where you don’t feel good enough or that you can’t achieve your goals, we’re here to tell you that you can do that AND MORE! Here’s Intern Magazine’s top tips to help you get the most out of your hard earned internship:

Make some new work friends

If you get asked by your colleagues to go get after work drinks, GO. Networking in a relaxed, fun environment is one of the best things you can do as an intern. Your colleagues and superiors are much more likely to help you out if they like you as a PERSON, not just ‘she’s a good intern’. Make sure you follow up your first work outing with a LinkedIn request, don’t add them on Facebook just yet. You don’t want to look like a stalker. Generally the rule is two or more non-work meetings; make sure they actually enjoyed the first social event before bombarding them with friend requests.

Create business cards

But… everything is digital now? NOPE. Absolutely not. Business cards give an air of professionalism and ambition that no ‘oh you should follow me on twitter’ can give. A business card does not have be super expensive and shiny, or be particularly specific. As long as it has your name, email (serious emails only, no ‘britney_is_my_god@msn.co.uk’s please) and number then your good to go. For extra pizazz add your social media links, then they can go see how hilarious you are on twitter.

Ask your boss to look at your CV

An internship is an opportunity for you to learn on the job. Ask your supervisor to sit down with you and go through your CV. What your doing right and what your doing wrong may not be abundantly clear to you, but the person who does the hiring has looked at hundreds of CVs and knows what works. Also, setting up regular progress meetings is a great way to show that you are committed to the job and will help your career in the long term.

Take Initiative

If you have nothing to do, don’t just sit there pretending to work. Tell your supervisor that you have completed your tasks or ask a colleague if they need any help. Putting yourself out there is the best way of getting noticed. However, managing your expectations is vital, during your initial interview ask what your average day will be like and work from there.

Learn about the company

Taking an interest in the company’s past, present and future is a great way to show your enthusiasm. Companies do not want ‘copy and paste’ interns. You know, those people who want to work in, for example, advertising… so they copy and paste their CV to every advertising agency in town. Show an interest in the company, not just the industry.

See the city

Interning somewhere new? Take some time for yourself, whether it’s during your lunch break or after hours. Internships are just as much about personal growth as professional, experiencing new cultures and surroundings makes you a more well rounded person. As well as giving you plenty of stories for when you get back home.
